UpdatedAug 28, 2011 12:24 AM ETAntonio Brown has been the Steelers' most impressive playerduring the preseason.Tonight, he was the best player at Heinz Field.And that is saying something considering how easy BenRoethlisberger and Matt Ryan made it look at times while playingpitch-and-catch in front of an announced crowd 56,754.The Pro Bowl-caliber quarterbacks combined for 434 yards in thefirst half of the Steelers' 34-16 win against theAtlanta Falcons. The difference between the two, as the Steelers staked themselves to a24-16 lead, may have been this: Roethlisberger had Brown, who hasclearly established himself as the Steelers' No. 3 wide receiver.Brown caught four passes for 137 yards and a pair of touchdowns.He also set up the Steelers' other touchdown in thefirst half when he returned the opening kickoff 51 yards."I'll just continue to get better and improve day in and dayout," Brown said. "You can see the results just pan out."Brown made one of his few mistakes of the preseason near the endof a 77-yard catch-and-run when he was flagged for taunting aFalcons' defender on the way into the end zone.The 5-foot-10, 186-pounder then looked anything but gracefulwhen he attempted to leap into the stands in the corner of thesouth end zone.If his play during the preseason carries over, Brown will getplenty of chances to improve upon his end-zone celebrations."He's a really good football player," Roethlisberger said. "He'sgot good instincts."Brown wasn't the only second-year player that had a big nightfor the Steelers (2-1). Cornerback CrezdonButler, seeing his first extended action of the preseason, returnedan interception 95 yards for a touchdown early in the fourthquarter.That gave the Steelers a 15-point cushion and mayhave moved Butler off the bubble as far as making the 53-manroster.Last night amounted to the Steelers' final dress rehearsalbefore their Sept. 11 season opener in Baltimore, and it producedmixed results.Inside linebacker Lawrence Timmons showed why the Steelers recently signed him to afive-year, $60 million contract, as his 44-yard interception in thefirst quarter led to a short Shaun Suisham field goal ? one thatgave the Steelers an early 10-0 lead.Roethlisberger, meanwhile, carved up the Falcons before callingit a night after a half ? albeit a long one in which he and Ryancombined for 58 throws.The downside for the Steelers could be summed up by asequence at the beginning of the second quarter.A breakdown in special teams allowed Eric Weems to return a punt48 yards. The Falcons promptly spread out the Steelers' defense, and Ryan made itlook easy in marching 38 yards in eight plays."I don't think we did a good job," outside linebacker LaMarrWoodley said on the pressure the Steelers got on Ryan. "I know, afew times, I lost contain and allowed him to roll outside thepocket. That hurts the team."The Steelers answered Ryan's 10-yardtouchdown pass to Roddy White with Brown's 77-yard touchdownreception. It will catch up to him eventually.The Falcons running back laughs at allof this."It doesn't affect me," Turner said. "Carries are carries. Youcan't control the flow of the game. Different situations call forrun plays. I just have to go out there and be ready every time mynumber is called. I'm not going to try to save myself, just to tryto squeeze extra years out of this league."Turner signed with the Falcons as a free agent in 2008. Hehas been one of the top running backs in the NFL in his three yearsas a full-time player. He has rushed for 3,941 yards in his timewith the Falcons, and only the Titans' ChrisJohnson (4,598) and the Vikings' Adrian Peterson (4,441) haverushed for more.Turner has done it despite injury. He missed five games in 2009with an ankle problem. Last season, Turner played nearly the entireyear with a groin injury, one that required surgery in theoffseason.Was it a problem? Turner led the NFL in rushing attempts and wasthird in the league, and first in the NFC, with 1,371 yards. Hemade his second Pro Bowl. His 12 rushing touchdowns tied Petersonfor fourth in the NFL.Turner's 4.1 yards per carry was down from 2009 (4.9) and a dropfrom 2008 (4.5), the latter another Pro Bowl season with 1,699yards and an NFL-leading 376 attempts."It's just funny; your stats are down but you are a Pro Bowlstarter. ... What do you want me to do?" he said. "I'm just goingto go out there when my number is called. Coach is going to give methe ball, and I have to do something with it."Turner won't use the groin injury as an excuse. However, headmitted he was in pain and the protective wrap limited hisexplosiveness. He wasn't able to cut as sharply or as quickly.There were times when Turner ran out of bounds at the end of a playrather than take on an extra hit."I was surprised to hear he got it fixed in the offseason,"fullback Ovie Mughelli said. "I was like, 'Oh, you weren't 100percent?' If a guy with a groin situation can lead the NFC [inrushing], I'm scared to see what happens this year."The Falcons' offseason mantra called foran increase in explosive plays. The team traded up to draft widereceiver Julio Jones, adding him to an offense that includes ProBowlers Matt Ryan, Roddy White and Tony Gonzalez and a healthyHarry Douglas. The running game could be in for some big gains.In the past three seasons, Turner has 100 runs of 10 yards ormore, third behind Johnson (122) and Peterson (116). Last season,he had 15 of the Falcons' 20 rushes of 15 yards ormore."We are a run-first mentality," Turner said. "Explosive playsdon't necessarily come from the passing game. We want to run moreexplosive plays. I want to get that [number] up, too."With me being totally healthy, adding Julio [Jones], the otherthings we do on offense and with a healthy Harry Douglas, we have alot of weapons on the field. Hopefully those dimensions open upthings for me."Last season, Turner carried the ball 334 times, and he has 888carries with the Falcons. In four seasons with theChargers, as LaDainian Tomlinson's backup, Turner had just 228carries.The carries don't matter to Turner. Productivity does."I look at yards per carry, but I don't look at it like I'mgetting too many carries," Turner said. "I look at it as far as myproduction. I need to keep my production up."Mughelli is eager to see would-be tacklers try to bring down ahealthy Turner with arm tackles this season. Running backs coachGerald Brown says Turner can easily carry the ball more than 300times again. Coach Mike Smith expects more production."We were all aware of the situation that Michael was goingthrough last year in terms of his groin," Smith said. "To me, itjust validates what kind of guy he is. He's a tough guy. He's notgoing to complain. QB Josh Freeman targeted him five times, andBlount made three catches for a team-high 62 yards, including a52-yarder in the first quarter on a checkdown pass."A lot of teams don't respect the fact that I can actually goout and catch a pass," Blount said. "So when I do it, it opens up alot of things for me and for our team."On the 52-yarder, Blount caught the ball near the right hash,scampered up the sideline and cut back to avoid a defender beforegetting hauled down at the Miami 29."I was thinking touchdown," Blount said. Berrian had two catches for 64 yards and was targetedfour times in the first half of the exhibition game.For the new Vikings offense to work at its optimal level, theyneed Berrian to resume his role as the deep threat that helps takesome of the focus away from Harvin underneath and Adrian Petersonin the running game.''Bernard Berrian is really the guy we like to see be able to dothat for us,'' coach Leslie Frazier said. Graves would not characterize theCardinals as close to adding Croyle but said he was the onlyquarterback Arizona was bringing in after backups John Skelton andMax Hall were injured.Skelton, the backup to starter Kevin Kolb, is in a walking bootto protect what coach Ken Whisenhunt says appears to be a highankle sprain. Hall partially dislocated his left shoulder inpractice on Monday.That left Kolb, who signed a five-year, $63 million contract -with $21 million guaranteed - and Rich Bartel as the team's onlyquarterbacks. Whisenhunt said the team would not go into Saturdaynight's home game against San Diego with just two quarterbacks, andCroyle is an obvious choice.He played for Todd Haley, Whisenhunt's former offensivecoordinator, at Kansas City, so the systems are extremelysimilar.Croyle was a third-round draft pick of the Chiefs out of Alabamain 2006. He appeared in 18 games in five seasons with Kansas City,nine of them in 2007, when he completed 57 percent of his passesfor 1,227 yards and six touchdowns, with six interceptions.Whisenhunt said Hall's injury, a subluxation or partialdislocation, is the same as the one that sidelined him late lastseason. Hall, in a fight to make the opening roster, was sent toPhoenix for further evaluation.Hall, a star high school quarterback in the Phoenix suburb ofMesa, made the Cardinals roster last year as an undrafted rookieout of BYU. Heleft the field holding his arm and in obvious pain.''It's unfortunate but that's part of the game,'' Whisenhuntsaid, ''and hopefully it's not something that will force him tomiss too much time.''Bartel was under contract to Cleveland and Washington but didn'tappear in an NFL game until after he joined the Cardinals in themiddle of last season. "It's reality." Reality took a cruelturn as the Giants beat up on the Bears 41-13 ina preseason game at New Meadowlands Stadium. That result looksgood, but felt bad for a team that is getting decimated atcornerback.Thomas, who teammates were convinced was poised for a ProBowlcaliber season, was injured just 22 seconds beforehalftime.He went down, got up, went down again, and walked off the field,appearing as if he had escaped serious injury after he collidedwith defensive end Jason Pierre-Paul as both were pursuing Bearsquarterback Jay Cutler.As it turned out, Thomas did not escape anything.He tore the anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee, willneed surgery and is through for the season.Just like that, the Giants lost their top cornerback andone of their most indispensible players."Part of the game that just makes you shake your head," coachTom Coughlin said. "One of those unexplainable things." It is acrushing blow to the Giants. Thomas, 26, seemed primedfor a huge year, coming off a breakthrough 2010 season in which hehad five interceptions and 101 tackles. It's only preseason, after all, and waytoo early to give up on the team.But who could blame a Bills fan for bailing, when theorganization itself seems to have given up on this season?The Bills have some of the most loyalfans in sports. Their need to believe is always greater than thereality. But they're not stupid. They know when management issincere about winning, and when the guys in charge are whistling ahappy tune for public consumption.If they're serious about winning right now, why haven't theyaddressed that pathetic offensive line? Do they expect RyanFitzpatrick to take the next step as an NFL quarterback whilerunning for his life? And why in the world did they trade LeeEvans?The players were stunned when they heard that Evans had beenshipped to the Ravens for a fourth-round pick. Drayton Florenceasked on a tweet if they wanted to win now or later. Terrence McGeecalled it "a hard blow" and "all business." Imagine what the guyswere saying in private.The Bills saved $2.75 million in thedeal. That's fine. Saving money always matters when Ralph Wilson isinvolved. If the new regime wanted to build for the future andcontinue stripping away old parts, so be it. But why not wait untilsome contender suffers a major injury at receiver? You're tellingme they couldn't do better than a fourth for Evans?Evans' production slipped over the years. He was aone-dimensional threat who rarely went over the middle anddisappeared against the Pats. But Evans made a lot of big playshere. His presence allowed Stevie Johnson and Roscoe Parrish toemerge last season. If you think they're better off without him,you're delusional. They're worse.Buddy Nix said there was a "logjam of talent" at receiver. A lotof bodies isn't the same as being deep. Johnson has been a starterfor one year. No one else, including Parrish, has done it for afull season. The potential is there, but show some respect forEvans, who was among the top deep threats in the league during hisseven years in Buffalo.We'll find out in the coming months how deep they really are.From what I saw Saturday night, this Bills team is dangerously thin atsome key positions, and lacking in top-level talent all over thefield. That's what happens when you cut corners on salary and fillout a roster with marginal NFL players.Don't tell me it's only preseason. That meant something when theBills had Super Bowl talent. Butwhen you're a bad team, preseason tells you a lot. It certainlymattered in 2009, when the offense couldn't score and Turk Schonertgot fired. It mattered last year, when it became clear that the Bills had the worst linebackingcorps in the NFL.It mattered in Denver, where the Bills were soundly outplayed by amediocre Broncos team. Coach Chan Gailey admitted in a halftimeinterview that his offensive line had been manhandled. He lookedlike a man whose son had just backed the family car into atree.Demetrius Bell played like an EZ-Pass lane in Denver. He's thegood offensive tackle. Andy Levitre, one of the successful draftpicks, took reps at left tackle. Imagine how Fitzpatrick feelsabout all this. No new linemen, no Evans, no contract extension.That's some commitment.Marcell Dareus looks like the real deal. The run defense will bebetter. But the secondary isn't as good as people think. McGeelooks old. Leodis McKelvin looks lost at cornerback. It'sMcKelvin's fourth year. Burressbriefly bowed, then hurled the ball into the stands.Burress, who was released in June after spending 20 months inprison on a weapons charge, was the focal point of the Jets' 27-7 victory over Cincinnatiat a rain-soaked New Meadowlands Stadium. It was Burress' firstaction, as he sat out the preseason opener at Houston because of asprained left ankle.But on a wet artificial surface, Burress showed no lingeringsigns of injury, and looked a lot like the star he was forPittsburgh and the Giants. The 6-foot-5 wideout was targeted seventimes by Sanchez, and had three receptions for 66 yards and the onescore."He played great," coach Rex Ryan, speaking at halftime, said ofBurress. "Like I said, if we get the coverage a certain way, goodluck to you. He is a big target, and when he is covered he [still]is open."On the 26-yard touchdown Burress beat fifth-year journeymancornerback Fred Bennett, who was in for starter Leon Hall. TheBengals had a mixture of first- and second-stringers in for the99-yard drive by the Jets. Burress appeared to get awaywith a slight push-off on the play, which gave the Jets a 17-7 lead with 51 secondsleft in the first half."I felt like I was moving in slow motion a bit," Burress said athalftime. "I was looking up and at the end of the play, I was rightthere where I was supposed to be. ... It is a work in progress. ...It is going to come. A couple of days ago, the St. LouisRams won their second preseason game in a row. The preseason record doesn't mean anything, but it does show that the Rams depth has gotten deeper. The Rams backups are balling out there and some of these players could be good contributors when their name is called. This is probably the best team in a long time depth-wise.The starters are a different story. They didn't look that good against the Titans.It's a good thing that this is a preseason game and not a regular season game. The Rams are using a pretty "vanilla" playbook during the preseason. You wouldn't expect them to put their cards out there scheme-wise, but the starters could have played better.After Bradford's long bomb to Brandon Gibson, the Rams first team offense didn't look good. If you thought that the Rams starters were going to put together a long drive this game, you were alsodisappointed. The defense had a few miscues that resulted in easy first downs and points. In their defense, the Rams offense put them in bad positions.With all that being said, it's still preseason. These kind of mistakes are common. Most of the miscues on offense and defense can be fixed with time and practice. The defense will be the easiest to fix, their problem was mostly miscues by the starting linebackers.. The offense, however, will need a lot more time to gel. McDaniels' playbook might be explosive, but it will take sometime for all of the players to get it down. The good news is that the Rams still have two more preseason games to get it right. Down below are the five things you should take away from the game. 1. The run defense shouldn't be a big deal.It looked real bad Saturday. However the defensive line did a good job for the most part. You can't expect the defensive line to play great the whole game. Yes they did get pushed back some, but the linebackers are supposed to help. Cut backs really hurt the Rams defense and most of the time the first team linebackers didn't respond. Of course, they will do their best to keep James Laurinaitisoccupied, but that's why you have three linebackers and not one. The Rams are now working Brady Poppinga and Ben Leber with the starters. Those two players should give the Rams the upgrade they need on defense.2. The new offense seems like it will be excitingIt's not just because of the long pass from Sam Bradford to Brandon Gibson. Just look at the different sets that the Rams have run the last two games. The Rams ran a spread, a three WR set, a three TE set just to name a few. Then the Rams will adjust their offense to whoever they are playing. All those factors should make this offense more exciting. The Rams don't have the best weapons, but they aren't bad. The biggest difference is that you can tell that the flow of the offense will be morevariedthan last seasons.3. The widereceiverrace isn't as exciting as advertised.Right now, the race looks just like it did during training camp. Right now it looks like Brandon Gibson and Danny Amendola are the only locks. Could one of the two rookies get cut? Some people are saying that, but you won't hear me saying it .Mike Sims-Walker most likely will be a starter with Brandon Gibson. Everyone else is fighting to get a spot. It's still a close logjam at WR. A case can be made for any of the WR's to make the team or be cut.4. The Rams secondary looks impressive.The secondary looks real strong this offseason. It doesn't look like the Rams will miss O.J, becauseQuintin Mikell has looked real impressive the first two games of the preseason. He is real smart and a good run supporter. The Rams paid a lot of money to bring Mikel in and it looks like he will be worth every penny. The corners look good also. Bringing Al Harris looks like it was a great idea. Justin King worries me, good in run coverage, but hasn't looked good covering. Ron Bartell and Bradley Fletcher are picking up where they left off. Craig Dahl looks like he will start, but Darian Stewart has really looked good this preseason.5. The offensive line still needs work.Okay, not trying to overreact. Sam Bradford called most if not all of the pass protections, so you can't put all the blame on the offensive line. With that being said, they did have a lot of breakdowns. Those breakdowns should be fixed when they have more time to gel. The run blocking also had me concerned, tt looked real 2010ish against the Titans.Jacob Bell didn't play, but he isn't a good run blocker. Let's just say it would be more encouraging if the Rams O-Line is impressive against the Chiefs. The Rams played 16 games with their starting O-Line last season. That was good, but injures do happen.
